Make an Entrance

Big or small, formal or functional, your entry way is your home’s way of saying, “welcome.”  It not only serves as an access point to the rest of your home, it also sets your decorating tone.  Heartland Builders offers tips for enhancing the impact of your entryway in your Grand Rapids new home.

Start with the door—It seems simple enough, but picking a front door can be tricky. They must be tough enough to withstand wind, rain, snow and sun and yet stylish enough to be the “face” of your home. Consider material, style, architectural design and finish when making your selection.

Come into color—Regardless of whether you prefer bold, intense color or more muted palates, color selection is important in making you and your guests feel an initial sense of welcome.  Pick a color that will transition well into the rest of your Grand Rapids new home, but also makes a statement on its own.

Light the way—Chandeliers, sconces, track lighting, lamps—there are endless ways to create light in your entry way. Decide whether you have the space or the desire to make your fixture the focal point or simply part of the overall design.

Cut the clutter—Notorious for shoes, coats and clutter, entryways need to be both functional and fashionable. Achieve this dual function with storage solutions such as benches, wicker baskets and unique coat hangers that serve both as style elements and storage solutions for your Grand Rapids new home.

Step it up—Stairs aren’t merely a means to an end, they can actually serve as major design statement. Consider a bold-pattern runner, unique handrails, intricate wainscoting or painted steps to draw eyes in and up.

Picture this—Select artwork or wall décor that fits the space both in size and style. Too big and it can make the space look small, too small and the art will get lost. Consider grouping pieces of different size, shape, texture and color to add interest. Incorporate a mirror to create the illusion of more space.
