7 Winter Fireplace Safety Tips

During the cold winter months, many homeowners use a fireplace to heat their homes. Here are a few tips from Heartland Builders for proper fireplace maintenance and use in your new home near Grand Rapids.

Always clean your fireplace before you first use it. You should also have your chimney and fireplace inspected and professionally cleaned, if necessary, before you begin to use it for the season.

Clear any flammable items away from your fireplace. Debris and old ash should be properly disposed of before you start a fire and any flammable decorations should be moved at least 2 feet from the hearth of the fireplace in your new home near Grand Rapids.

Leave the glass doors of your fireplace open when you light a fire and the mesh screening closed. Keeping the glass doors open will allow your fire to breathe properly and keeping the mesh screening closed will keep any stray embers from popping out of your fireplace. When you are not using your fireplace, remember to keep your glass doors closed.

Burn hardwoods in your fireplace instead of younger, green wood. Hardwoods burn longer and cleaner. You should also never burn trash or use flammable liquids to start your fire.

It may seem like common sense, but never leave your fireplace unattended at your new home near Grand Rapids. Always use safety and common sense around an active fire.

Use smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors at your home even if you do not use your fireplace often. It is always wise to use safety precautions at your new home.

Use a chimney cap at the top of your chimney. Caps keep animals and debris from falling into your chimney and out of your fireplace. A chimney cap will help keep your chimney clean so you will not have to clean it as often.
